Episode 43 – Slavery: Still Bad

Listen to this episode

Here’s a topic we never thought we’d have to talk about: Slavery.

Turns out human trafficking and indentured servitude still exists in the American Workplace (well, at least two workplaces in South Carolina and a Thai restaurant in Portland).

We also never thought we’d talk about Marc’s career as a dollar-store cashier, but here we are. (And a case out of Tennessee where the dollar store cashier got fired for drinking OJ.)

Luckily we have a listener-submitted story to provide some comic relief.

About the author, Marc

Marc Alifanz is the co-host of the Hostile Work Environment Podcast with Marc and Dennis, and founder of Four Peaks Employment Advisors. Marc lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife Tracy and precocious 8-year old twin daughters.

Dollar General is not a dollar store in the way that Dollar Tree is a dollar store–not everything is $1. It’s more like the Walmart of Walmart: super inexpensive, off-brand items sold for really low prices. Folks in the South go there when the quality of something isn’t very important to them or need something inexpensive to hold them until they can get something a little better quality.
