Irresistible Jelly Donuts

Delightful, fluffy jelly-filled donuts made from scratch, perfect for breakfast or as a sweet treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • ¼ cup sugar (plus 1 teaspoon)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup seedless raspberry jam

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water and one teaspoon of sugar and stir until dissolved. Add yeast and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine remaining sugar, flour, nutmeg, and salt. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and melted butter, then mix with yeast and dry ingredients until sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Let the kneaded dough rise in a greased bowl, covered, in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Donuts: Punch down the dough, roll out to half an inch thick, cut circles with a round cutter, and use a smaller cutter for half of them to create a space for the jam.
  6. Second Rise: Place cut donuts on floured baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Heat the Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to around 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry the Donuts: Fry donuts in batches for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  9. Fill the Donuts: Fill a piping bag with raspberry jam and fill each donut.
  10. Dust with Sugar: Roll warm donuts in granulated sugar before serving.
