Monte Cristo French Toast Casserole

A delightful twist on classic French toast, this casserole combines sweet and savory flavors with layers of honey ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, topped with a crunchy sugar glaze.

  • 6 slices of French bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup honey ham, diced
  • 1 cup turkey, diced
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. Cut the French bread into 1-inch cubes.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until smooth.
  5. Place the cubed French bread into the baking dish and pour the custard mixture over it, tossing gently to coat.
  6. Evenly distribute the ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese over the bread.
  7. Mix brown sugar with melted butter and drizzle over the casserole.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  9. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Serve warm with optional powdered sugar or maple syrup.

Notes

Use day-old bread for better absorption of the custard. Optional: Serve with a variety of toppings to customize each serving.
