Savory Traditional Meat Pie

A comforting dish with flavorful beef, mixed vegetables, and a flaky crust, perfect for family gatherings or chilly nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 recipe Pie Crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 egg (for Egg Wash)
  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • 1 medium Onion, diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 medium Carrots, diced (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Flour
  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pie Crust: Begin by making the pie crust. You can use a homemade recipe or store-bought dough. Chill for at least 30 minutes if making from scratch.
  2. Cook the Onion and Garlic: Heat a skillet over medium heat, and add the diced onion. Sauté until soft and translucent (4-5 minutes), then add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Add Carrots (Optional): Add diced carrots and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes until tender.
  4. Brown the Ground Beef: Add ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart as it cooks. Cook until browned (5-6 minutes) and drain excess fat if necessary.
  5. Thicken the Filling: Sprinkle flour over the mixture, stirring to coat everything well.
  6. Add Broth and Seasoning: Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, simmering the mixture. Season with thyme, salt, and pepper to taste.
  7. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  8. Assemble the Pie: Roll out half of the chilled dough, lay it into a pie dish, and fill with the meat mixture.
  9. Cover the Filling: Roll out the second half of the dough, place it over the filling, seal the edges, and cut slits for steam to escape.
  10. Apply Egg Wash: Beat one egg and brush it over the top crust.
  11. Bake the Pie: Bake for 35-40 minutes until the crust is golden brown and flaky, with bubbling filling.
  12. Cool and Serve: Let the pie cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Let the pie rest after baking for easier slicing. Pairs well with salads or mashed potatoes.
