Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 2 slices of thick bread (brioche or sourdough works great)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite blend)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (softened)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: chopped chives, red pepper flakes, or a drizzle of hot sauce

Equipment

  • air fryer
  • tongs or spatula

Method

Instructions
  1. Prepare the bread: Lay your bread slices flat on a clean surface. Use a spoon to gently press down the center of each slice, creating a small well in the middle — just enough to hold the egg without it spilling over. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on the edges of each slice for extra crispness.
  2. Add the cheese: Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheese around the edges of each slice, leaving the pressed-down center open for the egg. The cheese will melt and create a golden, bubbly crust during cooking.
  3. Crack the eggs: Carefully crack one egg into the center of each slice. Try to keep the yolk intact. If the eggs are large, you can gently scoop out a little egg white before pouring it in to prevent overflow.
  4. Air fry: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 2 minutes. Place the prepared toasts in the air fryer basket in a single layer (you may need to cook in batches). Air fry for 6–8 minutes, or until the egg whites are set and the cheese is melted and slightly golden.
  5. Check doneness: If you like your yolk more runny, check around the 6-minute mark; for a firmer yolk, cook up to 9 minutes.
  6. Season and serve: Once cooked, carefully remove the toasts using tongs or a spatula. Sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and your favorite toppings such as chives or red pepper flakes. Serve immediately while hot and crispy!

Notes

Use thick bread slices for best results. Cooking time varies by air fryer model - check at 6 minutes for runny yolks. Can be customized with bacon, ham, or sautéed vegetables.
