- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan
- Combine dry ingredients: whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in large mixing bowl
- Create chocolate base: melt butter with water and cocoa powder in saucepan, then pour over dry ingredients and stir to combine
- Add wet ingredients: whisk eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract, then stir into chocolate batter until smooth
- Pour batter into prepared pan and bake 25-30 minutes until toothpick comes out clean
- Prepare icing: melt butter with milk and cocoa powder, then whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until glossy
- Pour warm icing over warm cake immediately after baking, sprinkling pecans if using
